Traditional Flats Fishing Boats
Dream Catcher Charters was founded by Key West veteran flats fishing guide, Capt. Steven Lamp who's career spans back to the early nineties with many wins in flats specific tournaments for the Key West Grand SLAM of tarpon permit and bonefish. These tournaments had two rules. One - all fishing must be done in pole-able depth of water and Two - Must be done from a traditional flats fishing skiff or boat.
Many anglers prefer the unique nature that a flats fishing boat has to offer over the bay boat. First off its more challenging second its a more traditional way to fish the flats. The angler is on his own to make the casting shots on the bow of the boat commanded by the captain at the stern of the boat standing high on a platform poling along the flats as quietly and undetected as possible. Patience, ability to follow direction and above average casting skills are required to fully appreciate a day on the flats, on board a flats fishing skiff.
Fishing the flats from a flats boat is an acquired taste. Anglers must be pretty durable and thick skinned. Talent must be had in the way of casting with a spinning rod or fly fishing gear that is above average. There is no help on the bow of a flats fishing skiff. Your on your own. Physical ailments such as bad back or neck might think twice about a windy day on a flats fishing skiff.
With the improvement of bay boats coming on the scene here in Key West anglers are leaving the poling technical flats fishing skiffs for the easier, more comfortable bay boats that offer more versatility and smoother - dryer ride. For the exception of tailing bonefish in super skinny water the bay boats will fish just as well as the traditional flats fishing skiffs.
All that said. Few things compare to the accomplishment of catching a fish on the flats using a flats fishing skiff. The bond made between angler and guide is amazing. The fish caught are considered more of a trophy due to the added challenge.
Fishing a flats skiff is like a full day of playing an intense pool game. Each move you make is based off your next move working the tides like a huge pool table. Always planning, figuring out angles on fish, looking for edges, rips and races that concentrate fish behavior and try to make it predictable as possible. As a flats fishing guide the more I know about what the fish are going to do and how they will react is the best tool my anglers have to catch them.
My tools are easy. My flats skiff, my push pole and my angler. When it all comes together its truly amazing. -- Capt. Steven Lamp
