Bonefishing Key West

If there was a fish that made the Florida Keys and Key West backcountry and flats fishing famous it would arguably be the bonefish.

Sought after by some of the most hardened sport fishing enthusiasts, this catch and release sport fish has earned the reputation of The "ghost" of the flats. With mirror sides, a weary eye and senses that rival any predator the bonefish has long been part of the Key West Grand Slam trilogy of fish.

Bonefishing Season

Angler holds up a nice bonefish caught in Key West with Dream Catcher charters.Bonefish are here year round in the Key West area. Due to our massive flow provided from the Atlantic ocean to the south and the Gulf of Mexico to our north we have temperate waters for the bonefish to thrive and exist right here in our backyard.
The spring months as the waters become consistently warm around April May the bonefish come up on the flats to forage for shrimp and any other species of bait. The peak season is late summer through the fall all the way till the first cold front in November.

Flats Fishing For Bonefish

Sight fishing for bonefish is a sport fishing thrill not to be forgotten. Have one of our professional flats fishing guides pole you along on state of the art flats fishing boats in the shallows in search for these wary game fish. Use fly fishing or spin fishing gear with ultra light line. Live baiting we use shrimp, and small crabs. On fly we use small fly patterns that imitate shrimp and other tasty crustaceans. See more about our Fly Fishing Charters.

Presentation is everything, your professional flats fishing guide will point out the fish, where to cast and present the bait or fly. Be quick, bonefish are extremely fast and wary of any movement on the flats.

Once you have hooked one you will then see what all the fuss is about. Hang on tight and let the drag burn as your fishing guide poles you into position for the fight.

Traditional With Flats Fishing Boats

BonefishingTraditional bonefishing is done from a technical poling flats fishing skiffs that allow us as fishing guides to get our angler into super shallow waters for shots at catching a bonefish. Flats fishing boats can only carry 2 persons. When spin fishing for bonefish from a flats fishing boat, both anglers can participate in the hunt casting simultaneously at the fish. When fly fishing for bonefish then only one person at a time can cast while the other waits for their turn. It is possible to carry both fly fishing and spin fishing gear on our flats fishing boats for bonefishing guide to cater to our anglers but we do not recommend it.

Not So Traditional - Using Bay Boats

No so traditional bonefishing is done from our bay boats where we use our trolling motors to gain access to the shallow flats. A very effective way to cover lots of water in the hunt for bonefish as well as have the aid of your flats fishing guide right next to you during the hunt. Not more than 3 persons can be on a bay boat for bonefishing the flats at the same time. We can very effectively offer spin fishing and fly fishing for bonefish on our bay boats with no issues.
